Fly Me to Edo

Danning Niu (BRDD 2020, Interior Architecture, East Asian Studies), 2019 RISD Museum Andrew W. Mellon Summer Intern in Asian Art, created a 3D virtual reality exploration of the Kanzeon Raijin Gate in Edo, Japan, as seen in an 1820s print.

I Am Not a Robot | Yunni Cho | TEDxBrownU

Yunni Cho (BRDD 2021, Interior Architecture, Urban Studies, Cognitive Neuroscience) presented at TEDxBrownU in October 2019. In her talk, I Am Not a Robot, Yunni explores how creativity makes human beings irreplaceable​ by artificial intelligence.
Developed at Brown University, a new augmented reality system places virtual objects within real-world backgrounds on cell phone screens and lets people interact with those object by hand as if they were really there. Jiaju Ma (BRDD 2021, Industrial Design, Computer Science) is a co-author on the research paper.

New York designer Nikolas Bentel has created a handmade porcelain pipe for smoking marijuana with an unconventional wiggle form. The Wiggle Pipe follows a series of absurd projects by Bentel, who is a resident of the New Museum's design incubator.

Forbidden Love

Sebastián Niculescu (BRDD 2020, Sculpture, Ethnic Studies) performs, Tired Selena, part of the exhibition, “Y’all Better Quiet Down,” organized by Vaccaro and Nelson Santos this summer at the Bureau of General Services—Queer Division, New York. Niculescu's work is reviewed in Artforum.
The New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) presented its Creative Economy Awards in June. The Steel Yard was recognized for their leadership and work within the city of Providence and Rhode Island. Jenny Sparks (BRDD 2015, Sculpture and Geological Sciences), Client Relations Manager at the Steel Yard, was among the recognized group awarded.

Despite the diverse range of problems Kate Reed BRDD 21 ID addresses through her major in Industrial Design, they all share a clear common denominator. “All of my work,” says the third-year Brown|RISD Dual Degree student, “is deeply related to social change and the social good.”
Ariana Martinez (BRDD 2017) works across mediums including sculpture, installation, narrative audio, and print media to convey the impact of geography, architecture, and infrastructure on individual and collective experience. In “The People Who Feel,” featured on BBC Sounds, they share an audio piece reflecting a part of their experience while reporting in Puerto Rico.

Friday Five with Nadia Wolff

Miami native Nadia Wolff is a Haitian-American artist, designer, poet, and maker whose work beautifully blends culturally significant themes of gender, sexuality, race, and identity.
Sherente Harris, 18, of Charlestown, a member of the Narragansett tribe and a first-year student in a dual degree program at the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. Harris, who identifies as both a man and a woman, will talk about the struggles of “two spirit” people, as well as indigenous invisibility.
Anisa Holmes (BRDD 2016, Graphic Design, Economics, and Developmental Studies) wins Visualize 2030, a data storytelling contest in collaboration with the World Bank, the United Nations Foundation, and the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, Google Cloud.

Zachary Ziebell, a rare winter intern at HP Labs

Zachary Ziebell joins HP Labs on a rare winter internship this month and next. A dual fifth-year senior at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Brown University, Ziebell is majoring in both painting and symbolic systems, which combines computer science, cognitive science, and philosophy. He grew up outside San Antonio, Texas and in his spare time enjoys drawing, painting, and hiking.
