Brown engineering faculty and students design DIY ventilator
Eli Silver (BRDD 2021, Furniture Design, Engineering and Physics) is among a team of faculty and students from Brown University’s School of Engineering that designed a do-it-yourself ventilator, that can be quickly assembled using 3D-printed and readily available parts.

Masc.: A Refreshingly Well-Rounded Look at Masculinity
Laura Jaramillo (BRDD 2020, Furniture Design, Gender and Sexuality Studies) exhibits her chair, First Blood, in Masc., an intimate seven-person exhibition at Newport's Coastal Contemporary Gallery. The exhibition "frames masculinity as not necessarily a man problem, rather, 'a relational problem, one that can’t be viewed in a vacuum outside of the influence of culture or interpersonal relationships.' The holistic group show complicates the traditional 'men vs. women / good vs. bad' narrative about patriarchy, instead visualizing its impact on all aspects of life, including romantic and familial relationships, understandings of ethnicity and race, queer identity, economics, power and dis/empowerment."

Seabass Immonen (BRDD 2023, Apparel Design, International Relations) this year's Director of the Design Board for Fashion @ Brown, had garments in the annual runway show, as part of Brown's Fashion Week. “'So much of the handiwork in these garments looks purely artistic, but at the same time so much math, critical thinking and communication go into the process.”

Nadia Wolff (BRDD 2021, Textiles & Literary Arts) performed in a work at the opening of the exhibition Roots and Roads at Franklin Street Works on Saturday, Feb. 8th.
Students in the Dual Degree Program were invited to submit work that responded to the theme “Many Years Later.” Their pieces spoke to concepts of time, memory, routine and change using a diverse array of media, from sculpture to stop-motion animation.. ~Brown Daily Herald

Danning Niu (BRDD 2020, Interior Architecture, East Asian Studies), 2019 RISD Museum Andrew W. Mellon Summer Intern in Asian Art, created a 3D virtual reality exploration of the Kanzeon Raijin Gate in Edo, Japan, as seen in an 1820s print.

New augmented reality system lets smartphone users get hands-on with virtual objects
Developed at Brown University, a new augmented reality system places virtual objects within real-world backgrounds on cell phone screens and lets people interact with those object by hand as if they were really there. Jiaju Ma (BRDD 2021, Industrial Design, Computer Science) is a co-author on the research paper.

Library Inspires Site-Specific Textiles

New England Foundation for the Arts honors the Steel Yard
The New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) presented its Creative Economy Awards in June. The Steel Yard was recognized for their leadership and work within the city of Providence and Rhode Island.
